One of the roomier parks on the north side of town, Washington Park features an array of features including one of Roanoke’s two public outdoor swimming pools, a playground, Lick Run Greenway access, exercise equipment and a basketball court on the topside of the park. The bottom section of the park is home to another playground and basketball court, a shelter and restrooms.
The outdoor swimming facility at Washington Park has an Olympic-sized 360,000-gallon pool. Lanes range from three to five feet deep and each pool has a 12-foot diving well. Diving boards and dual water slides are available for pool users who know how to swim. The Fallon Park public pool area also includes a concession stand and a picnic shelter. Deck chairs and chaise lounges are available for relaxing poolside. The Washington Park Pool is operated by the Kirk Family YMCA. Please contact Sam Hughes at 540-342-9622 for more information.
The City of Roanoke announces that Fallon Park and Washington Park public pools will be closed for the 2020 summer season (May-August). This decision was based on ongoing limitations associated with COVID-19, as well as fiscal constraints. City pools are operated in partnership with Virginia Gators, Inc. (Fallon Park Pool) and the Kirk Family YMCA (Washington Park Pool). Maintenance and repairs, which are the City’s responsibility, will continue to ensure pools remain in working condition.
The proposed FY2020-2021 budget also recommends pools remain closed for next season due to fiscal constraints. The City has been approached by various groups and citizens who proposed the possibility of fundraising to open Fallon Park and Washington Park pools in Summer 2021. These discussions are ongoing and the City will keep the community apprised of any changes. We thank you for your patience as we continue to try and keep our community healthy and safe.
