Do you know a kiddo who likes being outdoors?Junior Ranger booklet, badge, and hat Have you and your family visited any of our parks and greenways? Would you like to help promote stewardship of our natural resources?

Then you’ve come to the right place to take the Junior Ranger Challenge!

PLAY Roanoke has created a free Junior Ranger Program designed to teach local youth about Roanoke and its parks system, as well as promote stewardship of the area’s natural resources. Through a series of activities, challenges, and questions, participants can earn their PLAY Roanoke Junior Ranger certification and teach others about the importance of our City’s open spaces.

WHERE CAN I GET MY BOOKLET TO GET STARTED?

Head to the Roanoke Parks and Recreation offices in the Noel C. Taylor building at 215 Church Ave, SW, Room 303. Due to the pandemic, the office is open by appointment only. Please call 540-853-2236 to schedule a time to pick up your booklet.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

PLAY Roanoke Junior Ranger BadgeOnce you have your booklet, participants can earn “stars” by completing the series of activities, puzzles, and challenges within. Participants need to earn 15 of the possible 25 stars to become a Junior Ranger. Once the participants complete an activity in the book, they can cross off as many stars as that activity is worth.

For example, participants can earn one star for completing the Animal Agility Exercises and two stars for attending a PLAY Roanoke guided hike.

Participants can complete most activities on their own, but some do require a signature from a PLAY Roanoke employee.

WHAT DO I DO WHEN THE BOOKLET IS COMPLETE?

Junior Ranger Certificate of Completion and Junior Ranger Badge

Once participants have completed as many challenges as they can and/or earned at least 15 stars, they should bring the completed booklet back to Roanoke Parks and Recreation at 215 Church Ave., SW, Room 303. Then, a PLAY Roanoke employee will quiz them on the activities they did and what they’ve learned (questions can be found at the back on the book). Once they’ve pass the quiz, they will receive their official certificate and be awarded their Junior Ranger Badge!

Note: For those interested, Junior Ranger hats are for sale for $20.
