Roanoke Parks and Recreation’s recreation section is responsible for hosting more than 2,000 activities and events in Roanoke, Virginia each year. The Recreation team is broken into four sections: Community Recreation, Outdoor Recreation, Athletics and Youth Development.
1. COMMUNITY RECREATION
Roanoke’s Community Recreation section is responsible for managing Mountain View Recreation Center, planning community-minded recreation programs and managing the pools in the summer. Community Recreation programs include affordable everyday fitness for all ages, arts and culture programs, trips and tours, events and weekly activities for senior citizens, swimming lessons, summer camps and more.
2. OUTDOOR RECREATION
Roanoke Parks and Recreation’s Outdoor Recreation team builds and maintains all of the trails in the city’s parks and at Carvins Cove Natural Reserve, manages the Discovery Center on Mill Mountain and hosts regular outdoor recreation activities and trips. Outdoor Recreation programs include guided hikes, yoga classes, summer camps, water sports, mountain biking, educational clinics, races and more.
Roanoke’s Athletics team manages the city’s athletic leagues for both youths and adults while also planning tournaments, competitions and events.
4. YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Roanoke’s Youth Development team delivers after school Positive Learning and Adventure Programs (P.L.A.Y.) at three recreation centers: Eureka Recreation Center, Grandin Court Recreation Center and Preston Recreation Center. Full and half-day summer camps are also provided.
