Winter doesn’t officially begin until December 21, but as the trees lose their leaves and the temperatures drop, it’s clear the change of seasons is near. PLAY Roanoke is here to help you ward off the winter blues and thrive this holiday season (and beyond). So, grab a warm jacket and dive in.
Plan Ahead
The days will be getting shorter as we approach the winter solstice on December 21 – the shortest day of the year. Our parks are open 6 AM – 11 PM, but it’s especially important to plan ahead for outdoor activities this time of year. Basketball, tennis, and other outdoor sports are a great way to stay active and keep warm in the winter months, but pack a light if you’re out before sunrise or after sunset. Things like hikes, trail runs, and mountain bike rides can be especially rewarding in the winter months, but remember to dress for the weather and your activity level. With all outdoor activities, be ready for less daylight and plan ahead so you can make the most of it!
Save the Date(s)
With so many holiday events, programs, parties, and more this season, you’ve got to stay organized. Be sure to mark your calendar and sign up early for anything with a deadline approaching. Our PLAY Roanoke holiday programs typically sell-out early, including the Candlelight Christmas Tours at the Fishburn Mansion, Live Wreath Making Classes, and the Yule Masquerade Ball. And if you’re looking for an excuse to get out of town, we’re taking a day trip to enjoy the elaborate holiday décor at the Greenbrier Resort and the Omni Homestead Resort!
Fortunately, the annual Holiday Open House is free and no registration is required, so we hope you’ll drop in!
Find Time To Recharge
The busyness of the season is sure to leave you seeking tranquility. Whether you recharge in nature or through connecting with friends, we hope you’ll take the time you need this winter! Bundle up and plan a meetup in the park, join a group run or ride, warm up with indoor fun at the Discovery Center, or simply pack a thermos of hot chocolate and enjoy a playground adventure. Plus, if the greenways are your happy place, you’ll be happy to know that our staff work incredibly hard to keep them cleared even after it snows!
