Invented in the United States, kickball is a fun team sport that is often played by youth on the school playground. But why can’t the young at heart also enjoy this beloved sport? Roanoke’s popular Adult Kickball League runs each year between June and September.

What is kickball again?

Originally called “kick baseball,” kickball was said to have been created by Nicholas Seuss, a Recreation Supervisor for Cincinnati’s Parks and Recreation team, around 1917. Kickball is typically played outdoors on a softball diamond with an inflated rubber ball. The game uses three bases, a pitcher’s mound, and a home plate.

League info:

The co-ed league costs $215 per team for the entire season. A maximum of 11 players are on the field at one time. All players must be 18 years old or older as of July 1 of the current season. Each team must have a minimum of four females and four males to start a game. There is a maximum of 25 players per team and also a suggested minimum of 15 players per team. Teams are guaranteed to play eight regular season games, in addition to one post-season tournament game.

Roanoke Parks and Recreation offers two Adult Kickball Leagues:  Lower and Upper. The lower leagues are more laid-back, whereas the upper league is more competitive and designed for experienced teams.

One-hour games take place twice a week between 6 and 10 p.m. at River’s Edge Sports Complex – South’s Softball Diamonds. Street parking is available on Wiley Drive beside River’s Edge South.
