Whether it’s a global pandemic or just a lack of motivation, sometimes we just want to stay home. However, sitting at home can lead to too much screen time and loafing around. Let us help! Here’s a quick tutorial for some sidewalk chalk paint. This is kid (and adult) tested, and we can confirm: it’s pretty easy and super fun for everyone! Check it out:
Materials:
- Cornstarch
- Food coloring (variety of colors)
- Water
- Bowl
- Whisk or fork
- Muffin tin/ice cube tray/egg carton
- Paint brushes and/or sponges
Directions
Step 1: Mix a 1:1 ratio of cornstarch and water in a large bowl. We used one cup of each for a batch for two people. Use a whisk or fork to stir the mixture until it is completely blended (about two minutes).
Step 2: Pour equal amounts of the chalk mixture into a muffin tin (split this depending on how many
colors you want or have).
Step 3: In each portion of chalk mixture, place a drop or two of food coloring. Stir to mix.
Step 4: Start painting! Different brush sizes and types help create different textures and shapes, so play around and see what works best for you!
This will wash away easily with rain (or a hose), so be sure to save your artwork by taking a picture (and tagging @playroanoke so we can see your masterpiece)! If you enjoyed this, sign up to receive our monthly e-newsletter with more fun ideas plus PLAY Roanoke programs and events!
