Take a “field trip” with us this summer as we experience a new adventure activity each month! In June, we’re wild caving, July we’ll be downriver paddling, and in August we’re doing an overnight to watch the meteor shower! Join for just one, or sign up for all three adventures.
Join Parks & Rec on an overnight trip to James River State Park, an International Dark Sky Site, to view the Perseid Metoer Shower. Once we arrive at the park, we plan to set up camp and explore while the sun is setting, but the real reason we are there is to explore nature after dark. Your instructors will come prepared with bat detecting microphones, bug light traps, and headlamps, to look for the wildlife that work the night shift. After looking for wildlife, we will retire to camp for a few hours of sleep before we get up to view the peak of the meteor show in the early morning hours and then enjoy the sunrise. Parents are encouraged to come along!
This is an overnight trip so tents, sleeping bags, and other camping gear will be necessary. If you do not own your own tent, Parks & Recreation may be able to provide one, but our stock is limited.
Snacks and drinks will be provided during the program, and there will be a dinner stop in Lynchburg on the way to James River State Park.
