Roanoke Parks and Recreation is hosting a ribbon cutting to celebrate the opening of a new section of the Tinker Creek Greenway. The ceremony is planned for Thursday, October 24 at 2:00PM, to be held at the 13th Street NE Trailhead (1902 13th Street NE).
This ribbon cutting will celebrate the completion of the Tinker Creek Greenway Extension, Phase 2A. The new section of greenway is approximately 0.68 miles long, running from the 13th Street Trailhead to Mason Mill Park in northeast Roanoke. Beyond the greenway itself, this project also includes a pedestrian bridge crossing Tinker Creek, three updated trailheads, a blueway access point, and new ADA fishing pier.
“We’re looking forward to introducing some new park amenities for the community alongside this new stretch of greenway,” said Renee Powers, Trails and Greenways Coordinator for Roanoke Parks and Recreation. “This part of Roanoke and Mason Mill Park in particular, offer a variety of recreational opportunities, and we’re excited to expand that access for the community.”
Following the ribbon cutting, there will be a group walk along the greenway. Attendees will have the opportunity to cross the new pedestrian bridge, view updated maps at the greenway kiosks, and check out the new amenities. All are encouraged to carpool as there is limited parking at the 13th Street NE Trailhead. Additional parking is available at Mason Mill Park and the trailhead off Mason Mill Road, and visitors can follow the greenway to attend the ribbon cutting.
Looking ahead, Phase 2B of the Tinker Creek Greenway Extension would connect the 13th Street Trailhead with Orange Avenue. While Phase 2B is not fully funded at this time, it is the next step in connecting this new section with the northernmost existing trailhead on the Tinker Creek Greenway at Wise Avenue.
