Happy Holidays from PLAY Roanoke!

Follow along on our 12 Days of PLAY to complete fun challenges, stay active, and win prizes! Each day, December 1 through 12, we’ll be sharing simple challenges. Complete all 12 challenges any time December 1 through 18, and we’ll choose 12 lucky winners!
How to Participate:
  • Daily challenges will start December 1.
  • Find challenges here or through our social media stories each day.
  • Complete all 12 challenges anytime December 1 through18.
  • Fill out the 12 DAYS OF PLAY online form (below) by December 18 deadline (form opens December 12).
  • 12 winners will be announced December 20!
  1. Come to the City of Roanoke Christmas Tree Lighting in John Nolen Plaza, or visit the other downtown plazas to enjoy the holiday decorations!
  2. Learn something new! Keep an eye out and you’ll find lots of educational signs in our parks! Be sure to stop at the next one you see and learn all about it!
  3. Did you know there are 51 different parks in the City of Roanoke? Find one you’ve never been to and enjoy a picnic!
  4. Stay active on the playground or one of our parks with fitness stations (Countryside, Washington, Vic Thomas, Horton)
  5. Get closer to nature by taking a walk on a trail, listening to the sounds of nature and observing wildlife. Check out the natural surface trails in Morningside Park, Garden City Rec Center, Fallon Park, Lakewood Park, Mill Mountain Park, Fern Park, Fishburn Park, and along Murray Run Greenway.
  6. Get in the spirit of the season by giving back. Pick up some trash on your next stroll through the park, and leave the space better than you found it.
  1. Gather a friend or two and play a game! Basketball, futsal, disc golf, or hockey – take your pick and head to the park!
  2. Take an art walk! Visit a mural along the greenway, or see the sculptures in Vic Thomas Park. Check out RoanokeArts.org to see new art projects happening in the city.
  3. Visit your favorite park or greenway. Whether you’ve been here just once or countless times before, pay it another visit and snap a selfie to show your appreciation for this public space! Note: photo will be required when you complete entry form.
  4. See the festive decorations at the Historic Fishburn Mansion! Visit on your own (see public hours here), or come for a program – including the Free Holiday Open House on December 17!
  5. Put your own spin on a Christmas carol! Horton and Countryside Park have music structures – so pick up a xylophone mallet and make some music!
  6. Last but not least, our 12 Days of PLAY wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the city’s most famous Christmas decoration – the Roanoke Star on Mill Mountain!
