River’s Edge Sports Complex is a large park in Roanoke. With the Roanoke River running through the center of the Complex, the park sections are commonly referred to as River’s Edge South and River’s Edge North. With two large baseball diamonds, 16 newly renovated, ADA accessible tennis courts and athletic fields, River’s Edge Sports Complex is a very popular park in Roanoke. Conveniently situated along the Roanoke River Greenway, the park is easily accessible by car, foot or bicycle.
Home to the ADA accessible Maher Baseball Field, eight tournament-ready and newly renovated, ADA accessible tennis courts, and open fields, River’s Edge North is a busy park in Roanoke. Many large events and festivals take place in the park, including the annual Roanoke GO Outside Festival (GO Fest). Construction of a new paved and wheelchair-accessible parking lot and new Bermuda grass fields will commence April 2019 at River’s Edge North. These improvements will further enhance River’s Edge’s amenities.
PLAY Roanoke is in the process of redeveloping River’s Edge North (click here for plan details). Beginning April 1, 2019, the park, parking lots, and footbridge to the south side of the park are all closed to both foot and vehicular traffic until Winter 2019. The tennis courts and Maher Field will remain open, and there is street parking along Reserve Avenue.
River’s Edge South is a popular destination for sports-lovers on any given weekend in the city. With seven, ADA Accessible fields, ranging from football and soccer to baseball, River’s Edge South is usually bustling in the fall, spring and summer with team sports. On the opposite side of the park, you’ll find more tennis courts and a playground. The beautiful Roanoke River and Roanoke River Greenway winds past River’s Edge South, making it easily accessible by car or on foot.
