🚐 Ride the Hatton Ferry

Join us on Saturday, July 8, 2023, as we travel to Scottsville, VA. As a river town, Scottsville’s history is closely intertwined with that of the James River. In the 1800’s, the Kanawa Canal played a vital role in moving tobacco and produce up and down the James River from Lynchburg to Richmond. Scottsville was a very important way station along the canal. The history of the canal system is told through reproduction batteau packet boats located in the square and through interpretive plaques that explain the canal system.
The downtown area, also known as the Scottsville Historic District, was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 for its well-preserved architecture and role in Virginia transportation and Civil War history. Scottsville is a crossroads of history and community on the James River.

The Hatton Ferry is the last poled ferry in the United States. Hatton Ferry is a poled ferry that crosses the James River at a site named Hatton about three and one-fourth miles southwest of Scottsville, Virginia. The ferry first debuted in 1870. It is one of Virginia’s treasures. If the water is too low or the water is too high, the ferry will not be able to run. However, the ferry workers would still be available to answer questions and show the ferry to people. If time permits, we may even take a ride up Walton’s Mountain.
