ACA River Safety & Rescue
Are you a person who spends lots time on the water in a canoe, kayak, or standup paddleboard? Would you like to know how to be safer on the water and help a fellow paddler in distress? Consider joining Roanoke City Parks & Rec for a 2 day River Safety and Rescue Course.
Over two days of instruction, an American Canoe Association instructor and trainer will teach you key topics for water safety and rescue including:
Trip planning: How to minimize potential hazards and risks through proper trip planning
Personal safety: How to avoid personal injury by wearing the right protective equipment and clothing
River hazards: How to read the water and recognize and avoid common river hazards, such as entrapments and pins
Swimming: How to perform a downstream swim of a rapid, including defensive and aggressive swimming techniques
Self-rescue techniques: How to perform self-rescue techniques
Simple rescues: How to perform simple rescues of paddlers in distress
Rope coils: How to make a successful throw to a stationary target in a rapid using a rope coil
Stabilization lines and cinches: How to use stabilization lines and cinches to stabilize or release a trapped person
