P.L.A.Y. – Postive Learning and Adventure for Youth

Offered at three different Recreation Centers throughout the city, After-School P.L.A.Y. provides a place for children to get homework assistance, enrichment activities, structured recreation, and general after-school care. Children will be able to interact with one another in a safe, positive and nurturing environment. All locations maintain a staff to participant ratio of 1:10. Registration must be received by 5 p.m. the Wednesday before each weekly session. Space is limited and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis so register early! The program will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Roanoke City Public Schools early dismissal days and is cancelled when Roanoke City Public Schools are closed for inclement weather.

Join us for a summer packed full of activities at Summer P.L.A.Y.! With convenient weekly sessions at two locations, this 9-week version of our After-School P.L.A.Y. program includes sports and games, arts and crafts, and various field trips, all with a focus on overall youth development; full day and half day camps are offered. Qualified, trained, and experienced counselors will initiate fun and challenging activities for all participants with a counselor to participant ratio of no more than 1:10. Individuals can register for the entire summer or week-by-week. Weekly registrations must be submitted by 5 p.m. the Wednesday before each weekly session. Children also receive two healthy snacks and juice each day as well as a nutritious breakfast and lunch made possible through the USDA Summer Food Program.

Another summer activity is the Continental Kids Camp.  This program uses as their theme each week a different country and will learn about the culture of that country-their food, their music, their population.  This way the children get to “take a vacation” to these countries without ever leaving Roanoke.  The size of the camp is limited so early registration is recommended.  Children provide own lunch, but snacks are provided, many times what the children make in the theme of the week.
