Trail Events and Races

Roanoke Parks and Recreation is proud to partner and offer several Trail Events and Races throughout the year.  Check out what we have going on below! For more races, visit our new race website,!

The Gamut

(18+, 10+ with an adult) Roanoke is the “Mountain Bike Capital of the East” and the single track at Carvins Cove is a big reason why. With the sweet trail offerings continuing to expand, riding “The Gamut” at Carvins Cove (every trail in the extensive singletrack system in a single day) has become quite the challenge: 40+ miles with LOTS of climbing. The absolutely incredible trails, and the corresponding high most mountain bikers experience while riding them, keeps the accomplishment of riding “The Gamut” seemingly within reach (though very few people have actually done it). Join other mountain bikers to attempt this feat and lay claim to conquering “The Gamut.”

Meeting Date: Sunday, July 10, 2016
Time: 9:00 a.m.
Price: FREE!
Meeting Location: Bennett Springs Parking Lot, Carvins Cove

Virginia’s Blue Ridge Creature from Carvins Cove

(Ages vary per race) Legend has it, that long before the water of Carvins Cove flooded the farmland once known as Happy Valley, a strange and shadowy gilled creature roamed the bogs and waterways. Now, for reasons unknown, sightings of an unusual reptilian figure have been widely reported. On October 2, a brigade of endurance mountain bike racers will be sent in to investigate, exploring 40+ miles of dark back woods while simultaneously competing for the ultimate prize: the XXC-VA state championship. Creature from Carvins Cove, presented by Virginia’s Blue Ridge, invites racers from across the state and beyond to witness the wonders of the Cove’s gnarliest singletrack in the final of the XXC-VA series, sanctioned by the Virginia Endurance Series. A 17 mile XC provides an option for those not quite ready for 40 in categories from beginner to expert. By the end of the day on October 2, 2016, we’ll know for certain if the Creature is real!
