Winter Sports

Winter Sports, such as skiing, snowboarding, and cross country skiing are a great way for you to be active during the winter months.  Catch a ride with us to one of our “local” Mountains.

Snowshoe  Winter Sports Shuttles:
(18+, 10+ with an adult) It’s a winter wonderland out there. Get outside and enjoy it at Snowshoe Mountain Resort! If you have a season pass and your own gear or are new to this and don’t know where to begin, we can hook you up and get you making turns in no time! The $20 price only includes shuttle, but our friends at Back Country Ski and Sports in Salem and Blacksburg have  ski and snowboard rentals for only $25 for adults and $20 for kids. Fee includes transportation to resort only rentals and tickets are not included.

Ski LogosEach Shuttle you register for will automatically enroll you in a drawing held by Roanoke Ski Club for a $20 Gift Certificate.  The drawing will take place on the Bus up to the Mountain.

**All shuttles meet at the City of Roanoke Public Works Service Center at 1802 Courtland Road (just off of Williamson Road behind Berglund) The morning departure time is 6:00 a.m. and the evening return time is approximately 8:30 p.m.**

Winter Camping Survival Skills, January 14, 2015
Winter is a great time to go camping and backpacking. Beautiful scenery, empty trails, endless views of the stars. Join us for this class and learn how to prepare for the 4th season. Topics will include gear and clothing selection, food and water preparation, how to build a winter campsite, avoiding common cold weather dangers and great local winter camping areas. Cross Country Skiing at Mountain Lake Conservancy, January 24, 2015
(18+, 14+ with an adult) Mountain Lake Conservancy sits above 4000’ in Giles County and with an extensive trail system based on the north side of the mountain, snow is abundant there even when the valleys below are wet with rain. Our instructors will show you in the ins and outs of traditional cross country skiing close to home and among the beautiful views of southwestern Virginia. Price includes transportation and instruction. Ski rentals will be the responsibility of participants and the trip will stop at Back Country Ski and Sports in Blacksburg on the way to the trails to get rentals.

Price: $25 plus the cost of equipment rental if necessary

Snowshoeing Excursion, January 24th, 2015
Just because there is snow on the ground doesn’t mean that hiking season is over. Join us for a hike with snowshoes through a winter wonderland. No experience necessary. Snowshoes, instruction and transportation are included.

Cross Country Skiing Trip to Whitegrass, January 30-February 1, 2015
(18+, 10+ with an adult) Whitegrass Resort in Canaan Valley West Virginia is an east coast mecca for cross country skiing. This trip will allow you to explore the winter amenities of Canaan Valley, including sledding at Blackwater Falls State Park, a winter hike to Blackwater Falls, cross country skiing at Whitegrass, and local restaurants. This trip includes all lodging (double occupancy), breakfasts, sledding, day pass, lesson, and rental at Whitegrass, and transportation. Lunches and dinners are on your own. Trip leaves at 7 a.m. on Friday and returns at 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Enjoy the best skiing around without the crowds and in a great house overlooking the Western Territory on our Snowshoe Mid Week Trip!

snowshoe chairlift silver creekSponsored by the Roanoke Ski Club, this trip includes homemade breakfasts and dinners by your Parks and Recreation trip leaders, lodging in a 9 bedroom house on the shuttle route on the top of the mountain, and transportation to and from the resort. It is a great way to meet other skiers and riders and have an inexpensive trip to the mountains! Lift tickets and ski equipment are not included in the price.
