Wilderness Medicine

Disrupting Natural Selection Series
Roanoke Parks and Recreation, The Appalachian Center for Wilderness Medicine, and Carilion Clinic have teamed up for a once a month clinic on various topics in Wilderness Medicine. Locations, topics, and times vary, but check out the selection of programs below to better educate yourself before you spend some time outside this year!

Moving Water Injuries NEW!
(All Ages) Rivers and moving water bring opportunities for different types of injuries with outdoor recreation. Inform yourself on how to handle some of the most common water related injuries, including hypothermia, foot entrapment, use of throw ropes, and more in this two hour clinic.

First Aid Kits NEW!
(All Ages) When you play outside, do you have a first aid kit? Knowing what to put in a kit and when to take it can help if someone is injured or even save a life. Learn the basics of what to carry and when and even leave with your own basic kit!

Trailside Trauma NEW!
(All Ages) Hiking and mountain biking can have different injuries than other outdoor recreation sports, learn how to look for concussions, treat lacerations, and sling broken arms and shoulders in this two hour clinic.

Snakes, Bears, and Bees, Oh My! NEW!
(All Ages) Recreating outdoors means we as humans are now in the living room of some scary and consquential beings. Learn what to do if you encounter snakes, bears and bees outside to not only protect yourself but also not injure or scare them.

Pints n’ Poses (dates below)

3 Beers(21+) What could be more fun than practicing yoga and enjoying your favorite local brew? That’s right! Head on down to Soaring Ridge to enjoy BOTH!  Join us every other Thursday for a pint and a pose. This is a class for all ability levels, so grab a mat and meet like-minded yogis and beer aficionados in the area! One beverage included per class.

Date: Time: Meet at 5:45, class from 6-7pm
Registration fee: $15 per class
On site registration is available before 5:50pm the day of the class
